Past Students

Kara Ruff - May 2018 to August 2018

Kara joined the team at BC CAHS in May of 2018 as a Co-op student from the University of Victoria. Kara is a second year student majoring in Microbiology. She declared Microbiology due to her fascination with what the eye can’t see, and her surprise at how bacteria and viruses are so small, but can have such a large impact. At BC CAHS, Kara will assist on various projects and some diagnostic work. She is very excited to get some hands-on work experience in the lab, expand her knowledge on fish health and learn new laboratory techniques. Kara has lived in Campbell River her whole life and is very glad to have obtained a Co-op position with BC CAHS. In her spare time, Kara enjoys hiking, camping, and playing volleyball.

Kendall Plant - September 2017 to December 2017

Kendall joined the BC CAHS team in September as a Co-op student from the University of Victoria. She is currently in her fourth year of microbiology studies and will be graduating with her Bachelor's degree next year. At the BC CAHS lab, she will be assisting with analytical and diagnostic techniques, with a primary focus on virology. She moved to the island from the East Kootenays in 2015 to continue her education closer to the ocean, and is continuing to explore all Vancouver Island has to offer. When she isn't at work or studying, Kendall enjoys hiking, baking, and reading.

Madison Audeau - May to August (2016 & 2017)

Madison Audeau

Madison joined BC CAHS in May of 2016 to assist in field work related to the Kudoa Mitigation Project. She is currently working towards her B.Sc. in biology at North Island College and is soon to transfer to Vancouver Island University. After moving to Vancouver Island 5 years previous, she was inspired by the coast’s beauty and wildlife to pursue the study of ecology and conservational biology. She is excited to develop a stronger knowledge base around fish health and marine ecosystems.

Charlotte Morrison - January 2016 to April 2016, September 2016 - December 2016

Charlotte Morrison

Charlotte joined BC CAHS in January 2016 for 4 months and again in Sept 2016 for another term. She is completing her third year at the University of Waterloo, where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Studies. She has taken an interest in microbiology and is looking forward to taking more virology and immunology courses in upcoming terms. In the lab, Charlotte will be helping out with the Kudoa Mitigation project and she is excited to learn new laboratory techniques.

In her free time, Charlotte enjoys running, cycling and reading.

Mikhayla Williams - May 2016 to August 2016

Mikhayla Williams

Mikhayla has just completed her second year of studies at North Island College. She plans to continue her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Victoria in the fall with a focus on microbiology and biochemistry. She is participating in a summer co-op through UVIC with BC CAHS. She works on the sea lice project and also is helping out with field work with the Kudoa Mitigation project. She enjoys the new experiences in the lab with microscope work and in the field learning new sampling techniques. She believes this experience will help her pursue a future career in medical research.

Kyle Fawkes - May 2015 to August 2015

Kyle Fawkes

Kyle Joined BC CAHS in May of 2015. He has completed his 3rd year at Quest University Canada, where he is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts and Science. Kyle’s childhood on Vancouver Island inspired an early interest in the ocean. He now focuses his studies on oceanography and marine ecosystems. At the lab, Kyle is involved with the Kudoa mitigation project and is excited to develop a better understanding of microbiology, as well as general marine lab research techniques.

Marcel Bernard - September 2013 to February 2014

Marcel Bernard

Marcel joined BC CAHS in September 2013. He has completed his second year of sciences at the University of Victoria and is now doing his first co-op work term in the biochemistry/microbiology program. Marcel is involved with viral assays and helps with the Kudoa Mitigation Project.

In his spare time Marcel enjoys rock climbing, running, and cycling.

Ondine Pontier - May 2013 to August 2013

Ondine worked at BC CAHS as a summer student and will be finishing her bachelor in Marine Biology at the University of British Columbia in 2013/2014. She grew up on Quadra Island and has had lots of time exploring the West Coast by foot, sail and swim. Ondine just recently completed a semester at the Bamfield Marine Science Research Center where she studied sea slugs as well as various marine organisms. Here at the lab, she dedicates her time helping with the Kudoa Mitigation Project and is thrilled to be learning more about aquaculture and molecular biology as well as research.

She spends most of her free time in the water.

Helen Bibby - September 2012 to April 2013

Helen BibbyHelen has completed her second year of biochemistry at the University of Victoria and is currently working on an 8 month co-op term at BC CAHS. She grew up in the interior of BC but has fallen in love with the West Coast. Her previous co-op placement was working within the field of entomology. She enjoys learning about parasitology, immunology and other related areas in aquatic health and is interested to learn more about aquaculture. She helps with the Kudoa Mitigation Project, virology, and routine lab duties.

Her free time is taken up by dance, yoga and studying.

Emily MacLean - 3rd Year University of Victoria Coop Student

Emily MacLeanEmily will graduate from the University of Victoria in April 2014 with an Honours in Biochemistry and a minor in Microbiology. As part of the Coop Program through UVIC, Emily will have completed four work terms upon her graduation, each lasting four months.

She is involved with a wide variety of activities here at BC CAHS, both lab-based and in the field. "I live on Quadra Island and appreciate the opportunity to have found a coop placement so close to home," she said.

Her hobbies include hiking, playing flute and sax, reading, karate, and belly dancing.

Jesse Spooner – 2nd Year North Island College Student Volunteer

Jesse SpoonerJesse was a volunteer at BC CAHS for summer 2012. He was in the lab two days a week, assisting with current projects, which includes a variety of tasks. He's a second year student at North Island College (NIC) in Campbell River. He's studying sciences, with an eye to enrolling in medical school and ultimately becoming a surgeon.

He played hockey for the Campbell River Storm as a forward and defenseman for two years.
