The BC Centre for Aquatic Health Sciences (BC CAHS) is a research and diagnostic facility located in Campbell River, BC. BC CAHS provides services related to improving the health aquatic animals and ecosystems through applied scientific knowledge. We work in close collaboration with the aquatic-based industries in fisheries and aquaculture and academic/research partners (UVIC, VIU, and DFO). BC CAHS also provides fish health screening and other diagnostic services that support the maintenance of aquatic health. The analytical laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, allowing learning opportunities in techniques such as tissue culture and virology, molecular diagnostics (standard PCR, quantitative PCR and RT-qPCR), and ELISA based assays.

We are looking for a hardworking and motivated temporary Laboratory Technician interested in gaining RT-qPCR laboratory experience at BC’s top independent aquatic health provider.

Job Title: Laboratory Technician (Temporary)

Reports to: Laboratory Manager

Job Summary:
The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for assisting with diagnostic services and research projects at BC CAHS. This position is temporary – January 2019 – March 31, 2019 with a possibility of extension.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Support laboratory work related to RT-qPCR activities, primarily:

  • Sample preparation and cutting
  • Extraction (RNA)
  • Perform RT-qPCR
  • Interpretation and reporting of results.

Other activities include: Labeling, media, reagent and solution preparation, sample receiving and processing,
Assist with routine activities, and general laboratory and equipment cleaning and maintenance. 


  • At least three years of post-secondary education in microbiology, biochemical, biological or fisheries sciences. Minimum requirement of a lab course in molecular biology (Principles of Genetics) and microbiology.
  • Courses covering chemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, principles of immunology, microbiology, microscopy, fish or invertebrate biology would be an asset.


  • Knowledge of safety practices in a laboratory (WHMIS).
  • Knowledge of good laboratory practices, sterile and aseptic techniques (Experience beyond coursework preferred). 
  • Previous RT-qPCR experience would be an asset.
  • Well organized and keen attention to detail, familiar with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), efficiency in communication and in keeping laboratory notes.
  • Ability to work well with others in a fast paced environment.
  • Initiative, confidence, and good team work spirit.
  • Ability with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook) and internet resources.
